From the KY DBE Program Manager...

Moving forward during challenging times is hard work, but small business owners are no strangers to challenges.

In fact, small business owners are better equipped to face challenges as long as they rely on their strengths and core competencies.

With the "Kentucky at Work" initiative and the infusion of funding for infrastructure projects in the state, there will be more contracting opportunities made available in 2009.

In this competitive market, preparing for upcoming opportunities is crucial. Beyond technical skills, firms need to develop a marketing plan, negotiating skills, a strong team, a financial plan,

including how they will access needed capital and many more planning tools.

Additionally, quality and safety control programs and policies can set a contractor apart from its competitors. Often it is not if a company can do the job, but how they will do it. Successful contractors know that their reputation is on the line every day.

I strongly encourage KY DBEs to take the initiative to prepare your business for growth by taking advantage of the opportunities provided to support you through the Ohio River Bridges Project's KY DBE Program.

Sincerely,

Tierra,
Tierra Kavanaugh Turner
