Prequalification
generates more questions among DBEs and DBE-eligible firms than any other
subject, with the exception of how to secure work on the Ohio River
Bridges Project. The information
needed to begin the prequalification process is available through the
Division of Construction Procurement, Prequalification Section. Contact

On May 24th at 1:00
pm, a pre-bid meeting for the Exploratory Tunnel project will be held at
the Harrods Creek Fire Department, at 8905 U.S. 42 in Prospect, KY - near
the job site. This meeting is
mandatory for prime contractors prepared to bid on the project. It is also
an important opportunity for KY DBEs to meet and establish contact with
other contractors interested in bidding on work on the exploratory tunnel
and access ramp at U.S. 42 and KY 841. | ||

As a result of
involvement in the Ohio River Bridges Project's Mentoring Program,
DBE firms have been included in project teams for other projects in
Kentucky. Most recently ehi
consultants was included as part of the Northrop Grumman (NG)
Information Technology System (ITS) Team for the KYTC Statewide ITS
Integrator Project. ehi's role for this project is twofold. First,
ehi will provide civil engineering services in support of Wilbur
Smith Associates (WSA), which will be doing the traffic signal software
integration. In their second role, ehi will be mentored by NG to
develop skills in ITS activities that will hopefully lead to
prequalification in the ITS area. In addition to this
project, NG has included ClasSickle, Inc., HDDS, Inc.,
Global Solutions, and J.Y. Legner & Associates as part
of their team for the 12 year contract for Management and Operation of the
TRIMARC Facility (Traffic Operations Center for Louisville and Southern
Indiana). The roles of these DBE firms will be to provide support services
to NG and WSA for Special Systems Engineering
Projects. | ||
"There's a
misconception out there that becoming DBE-certified is all there is to
securing a contract. We are working with the Ohio River Bridges Project's
Kentucky DBE Program to dispel that myth, to make sure everyone knows you
have to be aggressive, strategic and persistent in making sure that
certification pay off." ... Jose Ceballos, Director of the Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet's Office of Business and Occupational Development
(OBOD)
