The Kentucky Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) eNewsletter, published quarterly, is designed to deliver valuable information and insights on the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project (LSIORBP) to its varied team of managers, coordinators, contractors, suppliers and the community at large.

From the KY DBE Program Manager...
As work on the Exploratory Tunnel project approaches, our priorities are focused on identifying and providing information and assistance to the certified businesses that will bid on future work on the Project.
 Beginning in May, 2007 the KY DBE Program Manager distributed the 360° Business Assessment to all certified KY DBEs via email in order to gain knowledge about the businesses we strive to serve. The Assessment covers a wide variety of issues, from what is working well to what areas might benefit from our assistance. As a result of the responses, we are addressing DBEs strengths, weaknesses and opportunities with the EDI business growth programs.
On Friday, November 30, the Ohio River Bridges Project and the McConnell Technology and Training Center are offering Listening to Your Business and PC Essentials. And beginning on Friday, December 7, we will launch GrowthVenture, the 10-week advanced business planning program that will run through February 8, a typically slow period for construction related businesses.

We are meeting with DBE business ownersone-on-one to discuss the Project, its scope and the opportunities that are available, both for contracted work and business assistance programs.

Certified Business Resources
According to feedback provided by certified and potential KY
DBEs, it has been difficult for small businesses to find the most up-to-date
information about the resources and tools that are available to them.
It is important for
DBEs to understand how to position themselves for opportunities
like the Ohio River Bridges Project and other Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC)
and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) projects progressing in Kentucky.
In response to
this need, the KY DBE Program of the Ohio River Bridges Project has created a
list of resources and tips for DBEs.

DBE Spotlight - Big Meadow Oil
Co-Owners Sheila Pruitt and Betty Gentry
 Big Meadow Oil has been in business since 1981. Co-owners Betty Gentry and Sheila Pruitt started their business as a small rural country store built in a pasture; they wanted to do something for their rural community. With a whole lot of work, it metamorphosed into a bulk fuel and oil plant.
