The Kentucky Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) eNewsletter, published quarterly, is designed to deliver valuable information and insights on the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project (LSIORBP) to its varied team of managers, coordinators, contractors, suppliers and the community at large.

Community Transportation Solutions' (CTS) Kentucky DBE Management team, working with its many community partners, has already achieved amazing success, and this eNewsletter will share those stories along with those relating to the various agencies, organizations, businesses and activities associated with the Bridges Project.

From the KY DBE Program Manager...

As the General Assembly considers the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Six Year Plan and the Initial Financial Plan for the Ohio River Bridges Project, the KY DBE Program is still very much engaged in assisting certified businesses with resources that will help prepare them for work on the project.

All small businesses can benefit from planning for growth. Preparation is a particularly important issue for DBEs who may not have experience with bidding on such a large project.

Thinking manI cannot stress strongly enough that KY DBEs should take advantage of every opportunity provided through the KY DBE Program.

The Entrepreneurial Development Institute (EDI) exists to help DBEs. The 360° Business Assessment exists to identify the business and organizational needs of DBEs.

We are making diligent efforts to engage DBEs in these programs and resources - over 25 DBEs have already participated in the half-day Listening to Your Business workshop. If you have not registered yet, please do so - it is well worth your time.

If you have not yet completed the 360° Business Assessment or you would like to learn more about the programs available to you, please contact us - we look forward to meeting with you!

360° Business Assessment

Tool Box

The 360° Business Assessment asks some probing and sometimes challenging questions.

It is often difficult for most of us to consider that there may be areas of our business that need improvement.

Managing the business throughout its many stages, ranging from growth to decline, requires preparation and a willingness to take a step back and assess the strengths and weaknesses that require action to move forward.

Business owners that consistently assess their business are in the best position to manage the growth process and seize opportunities.

KYTC Scholarships for Engineering Students

Scholarship Application Deadline is March 8, 2008

In the spring of 2005, Natalia Hoskins, a student from Dunbar High School, participated as a Lochner shadowing student and applied for and received the KYTC Engineering Scholarship. She is currently a sophomore attending the University of Kentucky.

Natalia
"I'm really glad I was in EBCE and could experience engineering through shadowing with Lochner, Hoskins said.

"Learning about engineering encouraged me to apply for the scholarship. The experience also has helped me in school because I knew more what to expect."

New Partners Offer Resources to Small Business

SCORE

The community support for the Entrepreneurial Development Insitutute's (EDI) FastTrac programs is increasing.

SCORE's Existing Business Client Group (EBC), Spalding University, the McConnell Technology & Training Center, KMBC and McKendree University have joined The Bridges Project's business development initiatives to provide broad range of resources.

The content and value of these programs for small business development is the reason why these partners have come forward.
